Autonomous retail is modernizing fast, but the sector still lacks a shared, independent read on where it is heading — what is changing operator economics, what is mostly hype, where customer demand is moving, and which decisions made now will shape the next five years.
State of Autonomous Retail builds that shared understanding through operator experience, provider knowledge, operating cases, market evidence, and expert foresight. Its research agenda and findings are governed independently of any single provider or platform’s commercial interest, with material research sponsorships and conflicts disclosed.
Inaugural edition · planned for late 2026
The report examines two shifts reshaping autonomous retail.
The first is operational: operators are moving from standalone machines and disconnected software toward connected systems that coordinate fleets, locations, inventory, payments, service, and AI-assisted decisions.
The second is at the point of choice: customers will increasingly use AI assistants, health and price filters, and detailed product data to decide what to buy. This may weaken brands as simple information shortcuts while making trust, taste, and habit more important.
The report asks the questions operators and providers can no longer ignore:
The report draws on in-depth interviews; selected operating cases; public datasets; written contributions; anonymized surveys where useful; and structured expert foresight roundtables examining alternative paths to 2030.
Beyond the inaugural report, NARI is developing a recurring measure of how far and how fast autonomous retail is modernizing — tracking aggregate change across fleet connectivity, payments, telemetry, operating integration, AI adoption, equipment modernization, and operator capability.
The public Index will provide a shared sector baseline without identifying individual operators. NARI plans to publish the first sector baseline in 2027. Participating operators may also opt into confidential peer benchmarking where sufficient comparable data exists.
NARI welcomes research partners, including operators, research centers and think tanks, industry associations, investors, and media.
The research team will review contributions as the schedule develops.
